This morning, cycle through the ancient ruins of Anuradhapura with a local expert guide

There is no match for Anuradhapura across its contemporaries and few capitals around the world have ever been as long lasting. Going back to the fourth century BC, Anuradhapura was the spiritual and secular capital of the island for well over a millennium. At its height, the city was dotted with monasteries and home to over 10,000 monks, many of these monasteries can still be seen today.

Cycle through more than a dozen archaeological sites of the ancient kingdom of Anuradhapura with a local guide. There are many things to see and do in Anuradhapura: massive stupas like clouds hanging low on the ground, ingenious irrigation works that confound even the engineers of today, palaces and monasteries that display the brilliant craftsmanship of ancient engineers and stone masons, enchanting works of art, and a tree grown (still growing) from a cutting of the original Bo tree under which the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment. All this can be witnessed in an amazing half-day bicycle tour. As you ride along the streets, byways, and green lawns of Anuradhapura, you will get a picture of what this city would have been like during its glory days. Its alluring magic seems to have a lasting impression on you even after you return home from Sri Lanka.

Afternoon at leisure or book a spa session in the hotel

Early evening, visit UNESCO World Heritage Site Dambulla Cave Temple

Dambulla is a town built around a vast isolated rock mass and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Dambulla temple complex comprises five caves which have been converted into shrine rooms, images of the Buddha, and over 1,500 ceiling murals. The caves are at the base of a 150m high rock built by King Valagambahu who took refuge in it when exiled from Anuradhapura in the 1st century BC. This temple is by far the most impressive of the many cave temples found in Sri Lanka and is considered the best preserved and the largest in the island. Access is along the gentle slope of the Dambulla rock and offers panoramic views of the surrounding flat lands, including the rock fortress Sigiriya.

The climb from the base is not strenuous – and can be done at a leisurely pace. There are approximately 200 steps and takes approximately 30 minutes. The best time to climb is in the early morning or the late afternoon to avoid the heat.

Breakfast at hotel

Morning set off for an excursion to Sigiriya Rock Fortress

The marvelous site of Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is perhaps the most photographed sight in Sri Lanka. The site was built upon a massive boulder in the 05th century and was a hidden castle of the king. Later it was turned into a Buddhist monastery in the 14th century, the Sigiriya Fortress draws comparisons to the mythical cosmic mountain of Meru.

Sigiriya is a wonder to be explored, with over 1200 steps leading to its summit. Your journey begins with a tranquil stroll through the pleasure gardens, before embarking on the climb. Enroute, there are two resting platforms, where you can take a break while your guide tells you more about the history of this mysterious fortress in the sky. The climb can take anywhere from 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours. You will be met by some incredible views and interesting sights when you reach the top. The best time to climb Sigiriya is early in the morning when the weather is mild and the sun isn't too hot, or later in the afternoon in time to catch the sunset from the top.

Afternoon Jeep safari in the Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park is located in the heart of the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka and is easily accessible from various cultural sites. Minneriya is among the best parks to see Elephants on the island, with large herds of moving Elephants during different seasons. The park mostly consists of a mixed forest of evergreen shrubs, a favorite habitat for animals, which include deer and wild Elephants. From the safety of a well-equipped 4×4 you will navigate the park with a naturalist who will be able to point out various animal species to you and knows the best spots from which to view the Elephants. The ride may be bumpy but is surely a great way to explore this natural gem of Sri Lanka.

Morning visit a Tea Plantation & Factory with a Resident Planter

No trip to Sri Lanka would be complete without spending a little time visiting a Sri Lankan tea plantation in the Hill Country. On a tea plantation visit you can learn all about tea picking and tea processing and also enjoy some fine Sri Lankan tea tasting. It’s probably a much more exciting prospect if you’re a tea lover, but even if you’re not, the Hill Country, or Tea Country, as it’s sometimes called, is arguably the most scenic part of the island and worth a visit.

A typical tea plantation tour will take you through the fields to see the tea leaves being picked. You’ll then follow the leaves as they make their way around the factory.

They’re washed, dried, and shredded, and then the final loose leaf tea product is packed into tea chests.

It’s fascinating to see a tea factory in action; from processing freshly picked leaves through to packing the finished product. You can also see how tea is graded. Taste a cup of pure Ceylon tea in the factory. The tour is led by a local planter who is able to share a lot of knowledge about tea production in Sri Lanka.
